01Evidence literacy

Do laboratory, animal and human studies show the same thing?

No. Laboratory studies examine cells, microorganisms or chemical processes under controlled conditions. Animal studies investigate biological responses in a living model. Human studies assess safety and effects in a defined participant group. A laboratory or animal finding does not, by itself, establish a treatment effect in humans.

02Composition and laboratory evidence

Is every propolis the same, and why does standardisation matter?

No. The chemical profile of propolis can vary with botanical source, geography, bee colony, collection period and extraction method. A result obtained with one propolis sample therefore cannot be generalised to every propolis product. Standardisation improves comparability by defining source, extraction and analytical profile.

03Analytical food science

Can honey authenticity be determined with a single home test?

Not reliably. Honey authenticity is investigated by combining physical and chemical measurements, sugar profile, conductivity, moisture, acidity, pollen analysis, volatile compounds and, where needed, advanced instrumental methods. A single appearance, viscosity or flame test is not a scientific authentication method.

04Allergy review and case evidence

Can bee products cause allergic reactions?

Yes. Honey, propolis, bee pollen, royal jelly and other bee products may trigger reactions in susceptible people because of pollen, bee-derived proteins or botanical constituents. Risk differs by product and by individual. Being “natural” does not remove allergy risk.

05Institutional safety guidance

Why should honey not be given to an infant under one year?

Honey may contain Clostridium botulinum spores. Because intestinal defences are not sufficiently developed in infants under one year, the spores may grow and produce toxin in the gut, causing infant botulism. The World Health Organization advises that honey should not be given before one year of age.

Is there sufficient clinical evidence on bee bread in humans?
